Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the workshop

About the Workshop

Is this an official Gottman Institute workshop?
Yes, this is the official "Art & Science of Love" weekend workshop authorized by the Gottman Institute. This is not a knockoff or "Gottman-inspired" program - it's the authentic curriculum developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman. Saul J. Stern is a Certified Gottman Therapist and a Certified Gottman Workshop Presenter.
Who will be leading our workshop?
Your workshop will be led by Saul J. Stern, a State Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT), Certified Gottman Therapist (CGT) and Certified Gottman Workshop Presenter who specializes exclusively in couples work. He is also a Certified Imago Therapist and adjunct professor of Marriage and Family Therapy. He has presented this workshop for over 10 years along the East Coast.
How is this different from couples therapy?
Unlike private couples therapy, the Gottman couples workshop provides a comprehensive educational experience over 2 full days. We teach research-based skills and tools that you can immediately apply to your relationship. This is not group therapy - it's skills-based learning. It's perfect for couples who want to learn preventative skills, strengthen their foundation, or supplement therapy. Many therapists actually recommend this workshop to their clients.
What exactly is included in the workshop fee?
Your registration includes the complete 2-day workshop (Saturday & Sunday), all workshop materials and take-home workbook, and access to Saul throughout the weekend. The fee covers both partners - no additional fees or hidden costs for the second partner. Hotel accommodations are not included.

The Workshop Experience

What should we expect on the day of the workshop?
Saturday runs 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Sunday runs 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. You'll experience brief lectures followed by exercises done privately between you and your partner. There is a break for lunch each day. This is not an overnight workshop - you'll go home each evening. Dress comfortably.
Will we have to share personal details in front of other couples?
No. All exercises are done privately between you and your partner, and Saul will be available for individual guidance. There is no sharing of personal relationship details with other couples. We maintain complete privacy and confidentiality throughout the workshop.
How many couples will be in our workshop group?
We keep our groups intentionally small to ensure personalized attention from Saul while maintaining the energy and learning that comes from a group setting. You'll work primarily with your partner on exercises with facilitator guidance.
Will there be a therapist available to help us individually as a couple?
Absolutely. Saul will be available throughout the entire weekend to work with and help every couple. While the workshop includes presentations and exercises, Saul provides individual guidance and support to each couple as needed during the hands-on practice sessions and breaks.

Preparing to Attend

Do we need any preparation before attending the workshop?
No prior preparation is required. Just come with an open mind and willingness to learn. We'll provide all materials and guide you through everything step-by-step.
Is this workshop suitable for couples in crisis or struggling relationships?
The Art & Science of Love is designed for couples at all stages - from those wanting to strengthen an already good relationship to couples facing significant challenges. However, if you're dealing with active addiction, domestic violence, or severe mental health crises, we recommend individual therapy first before attending.
What if one partner is reluctant to attend?
This is completely normal. Many couples start with one partner more enthusiastic than the other. The workshop is designed to be engaging and practical rather than touchy-feely. We focus on research-backed tools and concrete skills that benefit both partners regardless of initial enthusiasm levels.
Can individuals attend without their partner?
This workshop is designed specifically for couples attending together. The exercises and learning activities require both partners to be present. If your partner is unable to attend, we recommend waiting until you can both participate together for the full benefit of the program.

Booking & Policies

What is your cancellation and refund policy?
We offer an 80% refund for cancellations, or you can transfer to any other workshop at no additional charge. Emergency situations are handled on a case-by-case basis with full consideration for your circumstances.
